Love Yourself

This was the most difficult page for me to write because the journey to self love for me has been such a long and difficult one. In my years of practicing natural acne treatment, I have found a similarity in 99% of my clients – typically those of us with acne in our adult years are very sensitive beings. And with this sensitivity often comes a lack of self love and a feeling of discomfort in our own skin. Please don’t feel that being “sensitive” is a bad thing, it means you are a highly intuitive being too (which is awesome!), but it can also mean that you feel so much and take on so much which can often manifest over years and years as a lack of self love and a feeling of discomfort in your own skin. Two emotions that are so closely related to chronic acne.

So let’s break this concept down and gain an understanding as to how and why these negative emotions can cause acne.

auraWe are energetic beings, we have much more than just a physical body. In my teenage years I was an atheist and didn’t believe in things like auras. It was only after a life changing experience that I was opened up to the knowledge that we are far greater than just a physical body. One of the activities I did during that time of transformation was to draw my aura. I encourage you to sit down and to that too because it’s a beautiful exercise. It doesn’t matter if you can’t see it or feel it, just draw how you feel it looks. And then make a second picture of how your aura will look once you are full of self love, self confidence and acne free. This is a sweet activity of manifestation and intention to do. Keep the second drawing somewhere special where you can see it, and know that even by drawing it you’ve already set the transformation in place to begin the steps to achieving that desirable outcome of an abundance of self love and self confidence.

How our aura, our physical body and acne is related

Our emotional and energetic health is so closely related to our physical health. If we are harbouring any negative emotions or energies, then these negative “feelings” can sit in our auric field creating imbalances. If you have ever experienced a broken heart then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. That heavy and painful feeling in your chest right over your heart chakra when you’re feeling broken hearted is real. It’s a pocket of dense energy that is sitting in your aura, there is nothing physically wrong with you but you can really feel it. As we emotionally begin to heal, then the pain goes away.

It’s not uncommon when we begin to do work on our heart and self love that a pain like this turns up. When I first begun work on my heart, I felt this pain during heart meditations for weeks until it began to lighten up and then dissolve. When we begin to awaken and then shift energetic blockages, sometimes we can begin to feel them as they’re on their way out. So if this happens to you, please know that it’s normal and that you’re working towards breaking apart that energy in order to release it.

Over long periods of time, left untreated these negative emotions that sit in our auric field can begin to create physical illness. Think about it, if you have a dense pocket of negative energy that you’re carrying around with you, how can it not eventually adversely affect your physical body. It is therefore so, so important for the healing of our skin to work towards having more love and joy in our lives (and who wouldn’t want more of that??).

When we don’t love ourselves so much then we are often uncomfortable about “being seen”, and what we show to the world. We can hide our personality but we cannot hide our physical body. Sometimes we create acne as an excuse to hide our physical body from the world, or sometimes it just manifests after long periods of the negative emotion of lack of self love is sitting in our auric field.

How to love yourself

Please know that there is no expected time that it will take you to get to the point where you are fully and completely loving yourself. Energetically it can happen in a heart beat, so it is entirely possible for you to begin to turn things around very quickly. However for some of us it can take much longer, as we work towards dissolving old beliefs and patterns that we’ve picked up over our life time, and even over multiple life times.

I’m going to give you an outline of some medical intuitives techniques for clearing your acne, along with some of what I’ve personally found success with in gaining self love. Please do whatever resonates with you, and really do it. What I can tell you is that this is the most rewarding healing work that you will ever do. As you do the work each day, little by little you’ll begin to feel more love and joy in your heart. It is a truly rewarding and wonderful journey.

Louise Hay

Love Yourself Heal Your LifeLouise Hay is one of the most well known medical intuitives. I’m including here in here because she does a lot of amazing work with helping people to feel more self love. If you haven’t read any of her books then I encourage you to seek her out. I recommend the Love Yourself, Heal Your Life Workbook (Insight Guide)

Louise Hay believes that acne is related to feelings of Not Accepting or disliking self. She suggests to use the following affirmation for healing – “The love and acceptance I have for myself is reflected in my outer appearance”.

Natalie Kent

Natalie is new to me but the information on her website resonated so perfectly that I wanted to share her with you. I believe in synchronicity and there is a reason why Google took me straight to her website. This is what Natalie says about acne:

You feel as though whatever you do is not good enough so you see yourself as imperfect or not as you would prefer to be. This causes you to be hard on yourself and everything that you do which creates tension and frustration. This frustration is simply repressed energy that could be better used to focus on your good qualities rather than your shortfalls. You need to learn to love and accept yourself, knowing that everything that you are and do is as it is meant to be. This will alleviate your frustration and allow you to use your energy to create with the freedom of self-expression.

You can check out Natalie’s website here.

The Love List

I created this activity after doing exactly this to work on my own self love years ago. The love list is a list of everything that makes you feel loved and happy. It’s important to take the time to write down as many things that you can think of. Then make a promise with yourself to do at least one of those things on the list every single day. I actually did this activity for close to three years!!! It was a beautiful way to retrain myself to begin to enjoy life more, to do things that bring love and happiness into my life, and to acknowledge that I was worthy enough to treat myself every single day.

My list included things like – take a bubble bath, watch a funny DVD, go to your favourite cafe, get a pedicure, etc. I enjoyed a lot of bubble baths during that time. Your list will be unique to you 🙂

Affirmations

Most of us are really good at putting ourselves down. Even subconsciously sometimes we can hold a belief system that can make us feel even worse about our acne. Thoughts such as “My acne makes me look ugly”, “Everybody will see my acne and think less of me” and “I’m never going to be able clear my acne” are just a few examples.

Affirmations help to turn those thought patterns around. And you can use affirmations to help to bring in more self love, or whatever other emotion or quality that you want to bring more of into your life. Write out your affirmation and keep it somewhere that you will see it everyday like on your bathroom mirror. I had a friend that would laminate an affirmation and stick it to the wall of her shower.

Here are some examples of affirmations:

  • “I am a Divine expression of life. I love and accept myself where I am right now.”
  • “I am naturally beautiful when I am myself.”
  • “This is a new and wonderful day for me; there will never be another day like this one.”
  • “I will look for the beauty in every problem I have to solve.”
  • “To be upset over what I don’t have is to waste what I do have.”
  • “I love myself.”
  • “I am more than my skin.”
  • “I accept myself completely.”
  • “The power within me is greater than what I see in the mirror.”

A Little Prayer

I learned this powerful technique from a friend of mine here in Peru. This is a little prayer that you say every day for a period of 30 days to help to intensively bring in more self love. Just be careful, it’s a very powerful technique! Transformation brings change, even when that transformation in positive. Say this prayer three times to yourself each day for 30 days while looking in the mirror.

By Divine Grace, I cut, transmute, release and let go of in my being, the pattern of a lack of love for the woman who inhabits me, and for a lack of confidence to myself. By Divine Grace, it is done here and now. Thank you, thank you, thank you, because it is already done.

Help From Facilitators of Healing

I’m a big fan of using “tools” for healing work. Over the years I have been lucky enough to come across some amazing energy and body workers and plant medicines. Trust your intuition, open up the intention and keep yourself open to whoever crosses your path. There are so many different types of healing modalities that I cannot even begin to recommend one or the other to you or even list how many things I have tried. But what I can tell you is that each and every healer that I have worked with has brought me closer to the woman that I am today. I have had some incredibly deep and life changing moments just from working with “healers” and plant medicines.

Ask your friends for recommendations, check the noticeboards in your area and even jump online to see what you find. And then be open to whatever turns up.

The journey to self love will be the most rewarding and beautiful journey that you’ll ever take yourself on.

After being sexually harrassed as a teen I got acne. It comforts me and keeps me feeling safe in some weird way after years of having it. It is like a strange friend. I can’t imagine not having acne.

Thank you for your post, I’m having a tough time at the moment with a very, very large acne cyst and a job that involves lots of contact with the public! I am a 40 year old woman who has been told her whole life that she is beautiful. I have always struggled with this, and suffered acne for over 20 years. I first read Louise Hay aged 18 and continue to refer to her work. I am a highly sensitive individual. I will remember you in my prayers. Clare, Ireland.

Hi there! I am sooo trying your techniques. I am definitely a sensitive soul and I can totally relate to your explanation about acne being caused by a build up of negative emotions. I had gorgeous clear skin most of my teenage years, and then, after a painful break-up when I was 19 I started to get the occasional spot. This has continued on and off for the last 20 plus years, and whenever I’m mean to myself it’s definitely worse. I resolve to be kinder to myself from now on, and I’m going to try some of your tips. I will report back and let you know how I get on. Many thanks for sharing your wisdom. 🙂

Well, it’s been a bit over 6 months. I’d kind of forgotten about this blog post, so I can’t say I’ve worked much on your specific techniques but I have taken more care of my skin (oil cleansing each night -mini-face-massage, being kind to myself- no more skin creams/moisturisers just natural oils -which I’d never have thought would do any good!) and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my skin. Going to incorporate your suggestions for affirmations/love list/aura drawing and will check back in sometime to report back… Thank you. 🙂

Thank you for such a comprehensive list of tools to help start my journey towards clear skin! (I, too, love tools!) I just recently came across Louise Hay’s ‘Heal Your Body’ and am fascinated. Though I’ve hoped and prayed for a cure for my acne over the years, I’ve always been averse to topical and chemical treatments. Something just didn’t feel right for me, with that approach. I do find that eating more whole, healthy foods makes a big difference in the appearance of my skin, and I am excited to take it to an even deeper level of healing and do some emotional work that needs to be done 🙂 Your guides above give me a starting place, which is so helpful.

    Thanks again!

    Dearest Fran,

Some 8 months after first finding this page, and particularly the “little prayer” (little but big) on it, I wanted to take the time to thank you for this post. The simple act of saying this phrase to myself in the mirror (my first response to it astounded me–who knew I was carrying such pain and doubt?) prompted so much growth and healing (in conjunction with other meditative work I have been doing), and I really think it is the number one thing that started me on the path to healing my skin after years (17??? has it been that many?) of living with acne. All other treatments I attempted promoted unhealthy obsession and self-blame. By spending time with this prayer and my reflection, I learned what my skin really needed–not much, apparently. Some hot water, some moisturizer, some time to heal itself. Nothing more. What a simple recipe, and yet the hardest one to learn because it’s so internal. I still have a few blemishes, like echoes of self-doubt, but I feel like they’re on their way out. And to say that my skin is not “perfect” yet would be untrue, because my sense of perfection has shifted. It doesn’t need to be anything but what it is.

So grateful that I found this, and that you shared it. Keep spreading love!

Hi Suma, healthy skin always comes from the inside out! A good diet full or organic whole foods, good fats, and plenty of hydration go a long way. I can’t recommend the best food guide for you because it will depend on your individual constitution.

Hello Fran, I want to first off just say you have done such an amazing job , you are spreading such valuable knowledge about acne that most doctors and dermatologists fail to understand. I have a few questions I am hoping you can clarify for me, do you think that acne is just a mirror of what is happening internally & is it just a symptom of an internal problem that needs to be addressed . Sometimes I worry maybe its just my skin , I guess I am hoping for some reassurance that there is a cause for this so therefore there must be a cure. Thank you I hope you can answer me :).

      Hi Samira,

With the exception of sensitive acne-prone skin that is reacting to skin care and causing acne, yes I do believe that acne is a mirror of what is happening internally.

In 99% of the cases that I work with it is an internal issue.
