Stop Thinking About It

When we have acne as an adult it’s very difficult not to think abut it. You only need to walk past a mirror to be confronted by the reminder that yes, you’re dealing with a problem that you thought only teenagers had.

But it is actually important to try and stop thinking about it. Why? For these three reasons:

  1. The less we think about it the less stressed we’ll be. Minimising stress is hugely important for healing acne. More about stress here.
  2. The more attention we give our acne the longer it’s likely to stick around.
  3. The more we look at it the more distorted our vision becomes and we can truly see more than what’s actually there. Guaranteed your skin looks ten times worse to you than it does to everybody else.

Let’s look at some ways to minimise how much your skin is on your mind.

Don’t spend as much time in front of the mirror

When my acne was at its worst I became obsessed with looking at it. It was like I was constantly needing to check in to see that it was really there, or that my mind wasn’t making it out to be worse than it actually was. The problem is, the more I looked at it the more stressed and depressed I became about it.

This sounds a bit dramatic but it actually does work – consider covering the mirrors in your home. I would drape beautiful cloths over my mirrors and uncover them only when I actually needed them. This way I could happily be at home without seeing my acne and therefore without getting so stressed about it.

Have you ever noticed that when you’ve been on holiday, met a new love, or begun a big fun project then your acne seems to get a little better? Distraction can actually help to get our acne off our mind and therefore we’re not creating it or stressing about it. We can’t weave a constant holiday into our every day lives but you can do something if you catch yourself obsessively thinking about it. Get up and dance! Go for a run, watch a movie, get into your garden… Do anything that helps you to get out of your head and back into your heart.

Natural mineral foundation is not a bad thing

If you are feeling a charge of negative emotion every time you look in the mirror then cover your spots up. Natural mineral makeup is not bad for your skin and you can use it very lightly as a spot concealer over your red spots and scars so that you don’t get that emotional trigger whenever you see your reflection.

The most natural of mineral makeups also contain zinc which is in fact helpful to the skin.

Belle Pierre CosmeticsHigh on Clear Skin recommends Bella Pierre, it contains only four ingredients that all check safe with The Chemical Maze Shopping Companion, and it’s the makeup brand that Fran personally uses. You can also use their foundations as a light protection from the sun (no more having to use sunblock!).

I would more than love your help. I’ve lost all confidence just like any other human who struggles with acne. It’s ruining my life. I have never broken out so bad in my life and am too scared to put anything on my face. I went to the dermatologist and they want me on medication but I know there has to be a natural way to cure it. Please help me.

    Hi, Fran.
I am really eager to figure out what is causing my rosacea (that’s what doctors say I have) so that I can get rid of it. I plan to purchase the complete consultation, but I’m wondering what the wait time is for the consultation. Thank you.

Hi Marti, the current wait time on email consultations is 2-3 weeks, and on Skype is about 1 week.

Mineral makeup never covers well enough for me and doesn’t stay on very well (I have large pores/ oily skin and acne). I found a foundation I like but I’d like to know your thoughts on it. It’s a cc cream from It cosmetics and it’s suppose to be all natural but the ingredient list is pretty long (I also use the It powder to set it). I honestly don’t think it contributes to my acne but its hard to tell what exactly is causing my acne.

Hi bf, I recommend that you look up reviews on Read the reviews in particular for those with acne prone skin.

I actually found that mineral-based makeup clogs my pores, and increases breakouts. I would get severe cystic acne on my jawline when using the mineral foundation, and once I stopped application(thanks to a family friend who has worked with makeup and makeup application for over 20 years in New York) my acne cleared up significantly in that area. Apparently this is because the mineral makeup is so micronized, that it actually enters your pores opposed to lying on the surface of the facial skin.

Many acne-based websites recommend using mineral make-up, however this approach gave me negative results for nearly three months, with clearing up happening within four days after I stopped application.

Hi Breezy, it could also depend on a lot on the brand. I hear from many women whose skin gets worse from particular brands (which I won’t mention), and then get great results from changing products.

Great article as always! If you haven’t tried it already, try to blend the mineral foundation with a few drops of hemp seed oil. It makes a perfect liquid foundation that covers really well. Art by accident 🙂

Great Maria! Yes I did read about a woman that was using a liquid foundation like that, glad you discovered it too and that it’s working for you 🙂 x
